ABUJA – Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, said following the introduction of new policies in the Ministry, Nigeria’s ranking in global competitiveness in Science, Technology and Innovation(STI) has improved significantly, as recorded by the World Economic Forum Report.
Onu stated this on Friday at the quarterly meeting with the new Permanent Secretary, Directors General, Directors and other management staff of the Ministry in Abuja.
The new policies, according to Onu, include National Strategy for Competitiveness in Raw Materials and Products Development in Nigeria, Revised New Policy on STI, National Leather and Leather Products Policy, among others.
It would be recalled that in the global competitiveness ranking, as recorded by the World Economic Forum, Nigeria improved from the position of 124 out of 140 countries by 2015/2016, to a position of 115 out of 140 countries by 2018/2019.
The minister, who went down the memory lane to recall that on his assumption of office, he met only one policy, which is the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, said new policies have been introduced and implemented in various sectors of the economy.
He pointed out that his leadership has introduced five new policies, adding that the implementation of these policies has enhanced STI ecosystem in the country.
While reeling out his achievements, Onu said SERVICOM in 2019 gave Excellence Award to his Ministry as it came the first position in the area of service delivery among all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.
He further said the Presidential Council under the chairmanship of the Vice President equally gave an award to NOTAP as the best performing agency in terms of service delivery and transparency.
Onu pointed out that on 31st January, 2022, Senate Committee on Science and Technology met with 270 Agencies of government, adding that Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), an agency under the supervision of his ministry, was singled out and recognised as the best in terms of 100 per cent remittance of revenue to the Federation Account.
The Minister further added that the University of Transportation in Daura, Katsina State is the product of one of the policies of the Ministry which is Executive Order No. 5.
He also said the effort by the Anambra State Government in promoting local content in the area of indigenous technology and industrialisation is another added impetus to the implementation of Executive Order No.5.
As part of measures to scale up the activities of the ministry, he said, the ministry has also presented four memos on Nanotechnology, Welding and Welding Related Matters, Biosafety and Revised Energy Policy to the cabinet office for onward presentation, consideration and approval by the Federal Executive Council(FEC).
He revealed that the Ministry is currently working on Artificial Intelligence, adding that the quarterly meeting of the top management of the ministry and heads of agencies under the supervision of the ministry facilitated these achievements.
He assured that the ministry would intensify efforts to record more progress, adding that science and technology hold the key to the socio-economic development of the country.
