The Bluffton University baseball team scored in all eight innings as the Beavers hammered Ohio Northern 24-9 on a cold Thursday, April 7, playing at home at Memorial Field. Bluffton improved to 9-11 on the season, while ONU slipped to 11-11. The 24 runs equaled the school record set against Finlandia in 2015.
The Beavers trailed 3-1 heading to the bottom of the second when the home team smacked it around for a 5-3 lead. A Luke Hanson (Somerset/Sheridan) two-run single followed by a Grant Hovest (Ottawa-Ottawa-Glandorf) RBI base knock capped off the four-run frame.
An inning later the wheels fell off for ONU as Bluffton pasted a snowman on the scoreboard. Two errors, a passed ball, a couple wild pitches and seven hits added up to a 13-4 Bluffton lead when the dust settled. A two-run double by Brandon Wilson (Casstown/Miami East) was the crown jewel in Bluffton's eight-run inning!
ONU errors in the fourth and fifth added unearned runs to highlight reel for Bluffton before a four-run sixth made the score 19-4. Wilson did it again with a two-bagger that plated Hanson and Garrett O'Reilly (Galena/Orange).
An Evan Houseman (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) sacrifice fly and a wild pitch added up to a pair of runs in the seventh and Bluffton finished up its scoring every inning pattern with three tallies in the bottom of the eighth. Ezra Deitering (Ottawa/Miller City) and Brady Mitosinka (Ida, Mich./Ida) drove in runs in Bluffton's final trip to the plate as the Beavers polished off a convincing 24-9 victory on a cold Thursday evening.
Sophomore Darius Boeke (Sidney) came out of the bullpen in the third and worked four frames of scoreless relief for his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits and two walks.
Seth Altman (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson), Hovest and Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) all smacked three hits on Thursday. Towell and O'Reilly scored three runs apiece. Wilson drove in four runs, while Hovest added three RBI.
Bluffton will lace them up next on Sunday, April 10, when the Beavers travel to Turkey Hughes Field on the campus of Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky., for a Heartland Conference double feature against Transylvania University. Game one is slated for 3 p.m.
