In recent years, the accelerated development of network technology has increased the public’s dependence on the network, and gradually designed and developed more kinds of network applications and network peripheral products. At the same time, due to the growing demand of the public for the network, the communication business has changed greatly. The most obvious characteristic is that the proportion of data business traffic is increasing. Due to the change of communication service mode, people have higher requirements for the access networks. Because GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) technology can meet people’s high requirements, and as a new access network technology, it has naturally become the most important technology of the next generation access network system.
GPON technology has relatively obvious characteristics in practical application, which is mainly divided into the following aspects:
·Ultra high speed and applicability
APON (ATM PON) technology has a maximum speed of 622Mbps and adopts ATM packaging and transmission technology, so it has insufficient broadband, complex technology, high cost and low efficiency of carrying IP services. And EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) technology has become more in line with the IP services broadband access technology because of the effective integration of Ethernet technology and PON technology. Then, GPON technology is a relatively advanced PON protocol on the market, with strong OAM & P characteristics, can support high speed and multi-service.
GPON technology has the advantage of backward compatibility with legacy equipment and technologies such as AG5200 and U300, especially for ATM and GEM signals. Therefore, the GPON technology-based access network can have the advantage of combining multiple services. The current use of GPON technology has gradually completed the use of voice services, video services, IP communications, ATM services and PDH, making many systems unified information and data, which is beneficial to the development of new telecommunications services.
To access optical fiber in a housing estate, ONU (Optical Network Units) should be placed in the area and walkway, and GPON ONU SFP optical transceiver should be used. Because ONU is connected to the client by twisted pair, the FTTB network structure must deal with the power supply problem. FTTB has two modes: FTTB + XDSL and FTTB + LAN, which shall adopt UPS power supply and household 220V direct power supply. If the community and new buildings have special requirements, the following modes should be adopted: mainly distributing optical fiber termination points in the community, corridor and floor, using GPON uplink port on the network side of small DSLAM facilities, and XDSL interface on the customer side to enter the house by twisted pair. In this way, advanced ADSL2 + and VDSL related technologies are adopted, existing copper line resources are effectively utilized, and DSLMDU with small and medium capacity is adopted. For the optical fiber terminal equipment in the community, it should use the integrated cabinet suitable for outdoor harsh environment, mainly by using the floor and aisle as fiber optic termination point distribution points, through the ONU to achieve optical signals, and provide several Ethernet as access points, using Ethernet five twisted-pair cable to connect clients. However, because of the interval between Ethernet Category 5 twisted-pair cables, the ONU in this mode cannot exceed 100m between the final clients.
For residential buildings such as villas and high-end communities, FTTH should be adopted so as to realize multi-service access. The 10G PON OLT should be placed in the office machine room, the light splitter should be placed in the community and building, and the ONU should be placed in the household room, or in the building walkway or weak current room. And the ONU interface should be used to connect directly with the household’s home network. FTTH application mode is GPON to adopt various service interfaces to support triple-play services.
The basic connotation of FTTC is to lay optical fiber network on the roadside. It is to place the network interface junction box on the electric pole, and people can directly access the network through the junction box interface.
The commercial building shall be accessed through FTTO, and the ONU shall be placed at the user end. FTTO is the major telecom services including current data, voice, special line and ITV services. OLT (Optical Line Terminal) equipment shall support FE / GE, E1 and STM-1 interfaces, and ONU shall support FE, E1 and POTS interfaces. Enterprise users have higher requirements for the stability of communication services. FTTO shall adopt the dual fiber protection switching mode of trunk optical fiber and branch optical fiber according to the needs of users.
In the process of community broadband construction, OLT and ONU technologies are mainly used to ensure the stability of the system and the practicability and extensibility of the standard. GPON technology architecture is suitable for the construction of community access network, which is of practical significance to accelerate the expansion of the network. In the future development, GPON will be more widely used. On the basis of improving the traditional GE level, it can ensure the diversity of technology types, and the advantages of GPON technology will be more prominent, so as to provide guarantee for access to greater bandwidth, realize high-speed data transmission and expand the coverage area, which can more meet the diversified needs of current users.
·Field observation and broadband design
Field observation is the primary aspect of GPON technology access application, and it is necessary to understand the actual situation of the access network. In addition, when designing user broadband, it is necessary to take the field observation data as the key reference standard to accurately judge the actual needs of users. After that, the test shall be carried out to check the consistency between the design and the actual demand. Once it is inconsistent, the problem shall be found out and adjusted at the first time.
First, since OLT devices are of different sizes, they should be selected according to the actual situation. In the actual setting, the remote input advantage of GPON technology should be reasonably used. In the process of power supply, stability and economic factors should be considered at the same time. When measuring the distance, the budget cost should be considered, so as to reduce the cost in the effective range of transmission signal. Second, for the planning of branch pipe, the networking mode should be selected according to the geometric building structure. Third, in general, the ONU is set in the outdoor cabinet, which mainly adopts desktop installation, wall installation and cabinet installation.
For GPON, the type of fiber optic cable that matches the system has to be selected. The two types of fiber optic cables that are relatively widely used are G.655 and G.652, and this needs to be selected reasonably according to the installation location. Optical transmission will have nonlinear effect, dispersion and attenuation on optical cable, so it is necessary to combine these parameters to select optical cable. There may be some cases that require the use of fiber mux. The G.655 dispersion degree is lower than G.652, so the former can be improved by taking more advanced technology when transmitting over long distances. GPON technology can operate normally after the above steps, and thereafter it needs to measure the speed as a way to ensure stable operation of the technology.
Access to GPON technology in base stations allows systematic management, thus ensuring that the base station does not have to rebuild the transmission system. If the GPON technology used in the base station is more advanced, the networking process will be more flexible and can reduce costs. Moreover, due to the continuous optimization of optical cable technology, the cost of optical access has been reduced, and compared to copper cables, optical cable operation and maintenance is more convenient and relatively easy to manage.
To sum up, the future development trend of access network should be to complete the optical fiber point-to-point connection from user to office, that is, optical fiber to home. However, due to the impact of many factors such as fiber to home cost and business volume at this stage, fiber to home has not been fully realized. Therefore, GPON technology, which is an intermediate technology developing from optical fiber to home, has played a key role in the access network since it was put forward from the beginning. GPON technology has the advantages of high speed, high security, low cost and high efficiency. It will play a more key role in the next generation NGN network.
