UN warns of rising global food insecurity

The channel of all VenezuelansThe United Nations (UN) announced that during 2021 the number of people suffering from food insecurity increased to 193 million compared to the previous year, according to its latest specialized report.According to the Telesur web portal, the Global Network Against Food Crises recorded an increase last year of nearly 40 million people from 53 nations experiencing acute food insecurity at crisis levels or worse.The document revealed that: “Of these, more than half a million people (570,000) in Ethiopia, southern Madagascar, South Sudan and Yemen were classified in the most severe phase of the Acute Food Insecurity Catastrophe.”Likewise, in 39 countries, double the number of people facing a crisis is recorded in the period between 2016 and 2021, while constant growth is seen as of 2018.In this way, the text pointed out that the main trigger of food insecurity in 2021 was conflicts with an estimated 139 million people in 24 countries.In addition, extreme weather events caused more than 23 million people in 8 countries to lack regular access to food in 2021 compared to 15 million in 2020.However, regarding economic crises, the figure decreased from 40 million reported in 2020 compared to 30 million in 2021, largely due to the consequences of COVID-19.
